RTDs
RTDs are constructed
using thin film technology. Thin film elements are made by depositing
platinum or nickel on a substrate and trimming to the desired
resistance. Ceramic elements are employed for cryogenic applications
and used with a mineral insulated sheath for high vibration
applications. Smart RTDs are available in platinum, nickel and copper
and with several different resistance to temperature coefficient
curves. |

RTDs - Sanitary/Smart
Recognizing the need for high accuracy in most sanitary applications,
SSI is proud to introduce our Smart Sanitary Temperature Sensors.
Standard accuracies as stated in this catalog are better than
commercial RTD products, but we didn’t stop there. Our High Accuracy
option guarantees the user superior accuracy and stability and is
backed up by an accuracy statement certified by NIST traceability. As
if this was not enough, with sensor matching we can virtually
eliminate even the small uncertainty identified by our high accuracy
certification.
Accuracy plus a product that is void of crevices and pits where
bacteria can grow make this the SMART choice for all Sanitary and
Clean In Place (CIP) temperature applications. |

Thermocouples
All thermocouples
(unless other wise specified) are constructed using a metallic sheath
and high purity mineral oxide insulation. This provides a rugged and
bendable design that exceeds the temperature rating of non noble metal
calibrations. Mineral oxide type thermocouples have a high insulation
resistance and are suited for most process applications. Smart
thermocouples are available in all calibrations with a variety of
sheath materials and diameters. |
|
 |
Industrial Assemblies
In most process applications the temperature
sensor is inserted into a thermowell or protection tube. This protects
the sensor from its environment and facilitates easy removal and
replacement. These assemblies generally consist of a head,
nipple-union-nipple and thermowell. Smart industrial thermocouples and
RTDs are available in virtually any calibration and resistance
temperature coefficient. |

 |
Heads - Terminal Bocks - Extension Tubes
Smart Sensors can
provide a head for virtually any process application. From our rugged
explosion proof head used in hazardous locations to our water
resistant head that provides a weather tight seal or our plastic
design that can withstand caustic wash downs for ClP and sanitary
applications. These heads are available in Cast Aluminum, Stainless
Steel, Cast Iron and plastic. The conventional threaded type and the
new flip-top threadless design are available for your convenience. All
metal heads can accept either a sensor terminal block or a DIN size
temperature transmitter.

Thermowells
Proper temperature
element protection starts with the selection of the thermowell or
protection tube. Conditions that influence the selection, include the
temperature, pressure, flow velocity, pipe size, insertion length and
the process environment and medium. A variety of materials and process
connections are available for both thermowells and protection tubes.
All metallic wells are constructed in strict compliance with ASTM and
ANSI specifications. For higher temperatures ceramic protection tubes
are available. Fluid flowing by a thermowell forms a turbulent wake
that has a defined frequency. The thermowell must have adequate
stiffness so its natural frequency is greater than the wake frequency.
Let Smart Sensors help you design your well around your process
conditions. Free velocity calculations are a phone call away. Smart
Sensors complete family of bar stock wells and protection tubes can
provide safe and reliable protection for any process environment. |

 |
General Purpose Sensors
These cost effective
designs are available using thermocouples or RTDs. They can be used in
any application not requiring a thermowell. Gases or liquids cannot
enter the head due to the sealed weld of the double-ended stainless
steel fitting. |
|
 |
Replacements Sensors
Smart Sensors can
provide a replacement for any failed thermocouple or RTD. Choose
between replacing the temperature element only or the entire assembly.
Regardless of your choice, these designs allow replacement without
removing the thermowell. |
|
 |
Temperature Transmitters
Transmitters can
accept an input from thermocouples or RTDs and produce an analog or
digital output. All outputs are linear with temperature. The
instrument can be programmed using software (easily downloaded to your
personal computer) or a common handheld programming device. A five
year warranty is standard on all transmitters.
Transmitter Types:
-
Programmable Two-wire Transmitter -
Type PT
-
Programmable and Fixed Range - Type
LCR and LCS
-
Hart® Programmable - Type HC

Multiple Sensor Assemblies
Temperature profiling is important whenever
multiple points of measurement are required over a broad measuring
range. Multiple Sensor Assemblies or Multipoints as they are commonly
referred to can be designed with using either thermocouples or RTDs
and in some cases both. As illustrated above, secondary seals can be
supplied for even greater safety assurance. These seals prevent
process fluids or gasses from escaping in the event of a process
upset. In critical applications component testing is recommended. Dye
penetrated, X-ray, and hydrostatic testing are standard available
tests.
In order to be effective these assemblies must be able to provide
temperature point location with a tolerance of plus or minus .25
inches and comparable sensor accuracy throughout the entire measuring
range. Our unique cross calibration method and positive point
identification assures like sensor accuracy and accurate and safe
performance. |

Miniature Thermocouples & RTD's
Miniature
thermocouples and RTDs are generally used where thermowells are not
necessary and are commonly found in pilot plants, research and
development, furnace, and OEM applications. Thermocouple constructions
with diameters as small as .01 0 inches are available with grounded
and ungrounded measuring junctions. All miniature calibrations can be
provided with flexible leads and a variety of connector terminations. |

Specialty Sensors
Surface temperatures can be a difficult
measurement. Special engineering and extensive testing of the Smart
Sensor surface pad provides fast response and accurate surface
measurement. Model 1500 shown above has been used extensively as the
primary control element for freeze protection control loops. A
retractable design that allows removal of the sensor while leaving the
surface pad in place is also available. Smart sensor designs have be
used to measure the skin temperature of vessels, pipes, boiler tubes,
superheater tubes or where ever the process requires surface
temperature measurement.
